TIPS ON CLEANING AND DISINFECTING OUR SANCTUARY – OUR HOMES

We are aware that novel corona virus is capable of living on surfaces such as cardboard for 24 hours, but up to two or three days on plastic and stainless steel. So cleaning and disinfecting high-touch surfaces is a step we should all take, even if we aren’t leaving the house.

The first thing we must know is that cleaning and disinfecting are two very different things, we should do a bit of both, even if nobody in your home is sick.

  • Cleaning is about removing contaminants from a surface.
  • Disinfecting is about killing pathogens.

We all should take steps to clean and sanitize high-touch surfaces in our homes.

High-Touch Surfaces to Clean and Disinfect Daily are:

Doorknobs, Table surfaces, Hard dining chairs (seat, back, and arms), Kitchen & Bathroom counters, Faucets and faucet knobs, Toilets (seat and handle), Light switches, remote controls (TV, A/, music system), Refrigerator handle, Game controllers, etc., etc.

 First Clean, Then Disinfect:

  1. First, clean the surfaces, removing any contaminants, dust, or debris. You can do this by wiping them with soapy water (or a cleaning spray) and a hand towel.
  2. Then apply a surface-appropriate disinfectant. The quickest and easiest way to do this is with disinfecting wipes or disinfectant spray.

Use disinfectant wipes to quickly clean down surfaces

To keep the germs at bay, use a disinfectant wipe, to quickly sanitize those areas like – doorknobs, sinks, cabinet handles, refrigerator doors, remote controls, which are touched multiple times in a day.

Clean surfaces with a disinfectant spray

For areas like couch and carpet that can’t be wiped down, use a disinfectant spray. Spray in a sweeping motion to cover the entire surface, then let it completely dry before sitting down or walking on the surface. Sprays can also be used on countertops, mattresses and tables.

Use a bleach mixture to clean floors

Shoes step on a lot of gross stuff during the day and if we are not taking them off before coming into the house, we are inviting in viruses and other germs. To clean the floors in kitchen and bathroom, use 1 cup of bleach mixed with 5 gallons of water to mop the floors.

Clean up with hydrogen peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide isn’t only effective for whitening teeth — in fact, 3% hydrogen peroxide was able to inactivate rhinovirus within eight minutes. Pour directly on surfaces like sink, countertops or toilets, let it soak for around 10 to 15 minutes, this will give it time to completely do its job, scrub the area and then rinse with water. It’s also safe to clean the toothbrush with hydrogen peroxide since the bristles can harbor bacteria.

From watch, shoes to jewellery sanitize them with a spray as much as possible before wearing them. As the lockdown is hopefully coming to an end, we would now be having our maids and other helpers like plumber, electricians visiting our sanctuary, in our next segment we would be discussing some tips on how to keep ourselves safe from these wanted visitors with unwanted viruses. So keep reading…
