Staying Healthy & Active During Lock down

COVID-19 pandemic has pushed many to self-isolate and practice social distancing. Staying home for prolonged periods of time can pose a significant challenge for remaining physically active. Sedentary behaviour and low levels of physical activity can have negative effects on the health, well-being and quality of life. Self-quarantine can also cause additional stress and challenge the mental health of those Locked in.. Physical activity and relaxation techniques can be valuable tools to help remain calm and continue to protect health during this time.

We list some tips for staying active at home, with no special equipment and with limited space.

Take short active breaks during the day.

Dancing, playing with children, and performing domestic chores such as cleaning and gardening are means to stay active at home.


Even in small spaces, walking around or walking on the spot can help remain active. Whenever on a phone call, stand or walk around home while talking. Though undesirable, but If able to be outdoors some brisk walk or exercise will be of immense value. Of course , be sure to maintain at least a 1-meter distance from other people.

Jump Rope 

It is a great cardio exercise, strengthens muscles in the legs and arms and is also good for developing focus, besides burning calories.

Stand up.

Reduce sedentary time by standing up whenever possible. Ideally, aim to interrupt sitting and reclining time every 30 minutes. During sedentary leisure time prioritize cognitively stimulating activities, such as reading, board games, and puzzles.

Yoga & Meditate

Meditation and deep breathing can help remain calm and relaxed. There are plenty of online yoga classes, both free and paid. Some youtube channels even offer complete playlists for  beginners so this is a great time to start something new.

Follow an online exercise class.

Take advantage of the wealth of online exercise classes. Many of these are free and can be found on YouTube. Be cautious and aware of your limitations.
